It’s no secret that the IT sector in Ireland is currently booming. The location, membership of the EU and the fact it is the only English-speaking member of the Eurozone provides a highly attractive proposition for multinational firms. Add Ireland’s incredibly close ties with the US, and it’s no mystery why almost every globally recognised Software company has a base in Ireland. This has led to Ireland being one of the major global players in the Software sector, and in turn, has created an incredibly high demand for top talent.

Current Trends

In August, LinkedIn reported that there are over 900 software companies, including both multinational and indigenous firms, employing 24,000 people and generating €16 billion of exports annually, making Ireland the world’s second largest software exporter. This report also included there are currently 12,000 vacancies open across the country

What does this all mean? It means that there is an obvious skill deficit and talent shortage across all IT verticals (Infrastructure, Development, QA) now across the entire country. The law of supply and demand is playing heavily in the favour of employees. High demand means inflated salary provisions  and flexibility with working conditions such as work from home days, flexible working hours etc. This is the time to maximise your earning potential!

Irelands Tech Future

With the last recession still fresh in the minds, there will obviously be caution when attempting to make industry predictions. Fortunately, all the signs say Irelands tech boom is going nowhere. Major players are continuing to invest in Ireland. Ireland already houses data centres for companies including Google, Microsoft and Amazon, and being the only English-speaking country in the EU, companies continue to choose Ireland for their European data and R&D centres.

Away from the large MNC, and you have some exciting and thriving SMEs in Ireland. Enterprise Ireland has been helping grow businesses across the country for some time now and the fund it controls has grown substantially. With a programme of matched investing, start-ups who get private funding can see that funding increased by Enterprise Ireland. The system makes Irish start-ups more desirable to investors which has led to an ideal balance in company size across the nation.
