For some people an interview can be a daunting prospect, but it’s very simple, the more preparation you do, the calmer and more confident you will be in the interview. This will enable you to perform to the best of your abilities. The key to success in any interview is first to prepare, and second to relax; So with that in mind, here are some useful tips to ensure that you give yourself the best chance to be successful;

Tip 1: Information Gathering

Get as much information from the recruiter as possible about the interview. This should include details about the interviewer/s, the location, the role, possible scenarios, the team structure, etc. and may also include information about the style and approach to questioning, which your recruiter can help you navigate.

Tip 2: Research

Armed with all the information about the position and the company, next step is to Research. It is vitally important that you are familiar with the company structure, the location or locations, good news stories etc,

Often doing a practice interview with family or a friend, or even practicing answers in front of a mirror can have the dual application of getting feedback and calming nerves.

Tip 3: Setting & Dress Code

At this stage you have now completed all your prep work. Make sure you dress appropriately. Again, your recruiter will be an invaluable source here. If the call is via video, the same rules will apply. Remember, if you are unsure, it is always best to dress more formally.

If the call is via Video link – make sure you’re in a quiet professional space where you won't be disturbed. It’s always best to arrive on call with a laptop or a phone in a stand (not held in your hand!) Make sure you have reliable wifi or a network connection.

Ok, the day has arrived, and you have done all your prep. Well done! If possible, take a day / time off work so you can go over the final details at your leisure without needing to respond to emails /calls. On the day of the interview, I would always recommend doing light exercise or breathing exercise to help you relax. Remember it is normal to get nervous. The interviewers will expect candidates to be a little nervous and may accommodate the same with some chit chat. If you suffer from nervousness, try a mindfulness practice or a self-care exercise that suits you.

Tip 5: Be on Time

This is your first impression: Arrive to your destination early, anticipate traffic delays. It is key you arrive / log in on time. For video calls, I would advise logging on 15 minutes early. Often the interviews can be delayed, so best to stay logged in until you are called.

Tip 6: Stay Calm

Focus on your breathing throughout the interview as this will help your mind to stay fresh. Remember to listen to the question asked and take your time answering. Ask the interview to repeat or clarify a question – engaging your active listening skills, Irish people have a habit of speaking very quickly! Keep your answers concise and avoid rambling. Remember, less is often more! Try and enjoy the interview, and don’t be afraid to inject some humour.

Final Tip

Everything is done now. You can’t do any more. Call your recruiter and let them know how things went. Waiting for a response can be a challenge but try and go about your life as normal. If it is meant to be, it will happen.
