Update your LinkedIn

LinkedIn is your professional representation on the internet. It is not uncommon for employers to look up a candidate’s social profiles upon reading a promising CV to ensure the candidate in question is of professionally acclimated. Therefore, it is important to ensure you have a LinkedIn account and that it is presented in the best way possible. Your profile picture should ideally be a recent professional headshot. If you do not have one, put on your office wear and snap a photo against a neutral background. Your bio should be short and concise, detailing your area of work, expertise, key skills and notable accomplishments withing the area. We also encourage you to take time when choosing the skills attached to your profile, be sure to include anything that is relevant to your area of work and do not disregard the ‘obvious’ skills like Microsoft, Typing or Emails. Being able to create a companywide JIRA website is certainly impressive, but having a firm grasp of the basics of IT can not be overstated enough.

Build your network

Following on from the previous point, its important to built a network of people on the platform so that if an employer does view your profile, they can see that you are engaging with the right people and are active in the community of your chosen field. Follow industry experts (or connect if you can), relevant blogs and join groups. This also has the added benefit of being a good knowledge source, where information can be found and gained through your own chosen field.

Set Goals. Manage Time

The job search can at times be challenging and sometimes demotivating after spending so long applying for roles, filling out questionnaires and writing job specific cover letters. However, there are easy steps to keep yourself motivated during the job search. Namely, a set time or set number that you can work towards. This could be a set number of hours you spend searching for and applying for jobs, or perhaps a set number of applications you can complete each day. By spreading out your time, you’re taking steps towards your future career without compromising on your downtime, which will result in you feeling less demotivated and worn out. For example, you may choose to complete 7 applications a day. That adds up to nearly 50 applications in a week, which will drastically increase your chances of a response!

Tailor Made CV

Your CV tells the story of who you are as a professional, however, with the many applicants a company receives, the average employer spends only 6-10 seconds reading any one CV. Therefore, if you wish to secure the role, it is imperative that you tailor your CV to the job in question. Read the job description, look at the requirements and skills needed, do you posses these skills? Your job is to take the skills and responsibilities in the job listing and incorporate them into your own relevant experience and knowledge, so when an employer reads your CV for the first time, its easy for them to find the keywords and phrases that they’ll be looking to match up to the job requirements.
